  2. On July 4, 1848, the cornerstone was laid by President James K. Polk.  The ceremony was also attended by then Representatives Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.

  4. Dedication:
  5. In December 1884, the monument was finished with a 3,300-pound marble capstone, and topped with a 9-inch pyramid made of cast aluminum.

  10. Construction:
  11. After construction commenced, the work was funded by subscriptions collected by the Washington Monument Society.  Financing ran out in 1853 and the monument remained unfinished for 25 years.  President Ulysses S. Grant authorized the Federal Government to complete the construction.
